Works of art at five Stony Brook University art galleries were featured at the Spring 2022 Art Crawl on Wednesday, April 13.
The art crawl began at the Simons Center Gallery and continued to the Lawrence Alloway Memorial Gallery in the Melville Library, followed by the library’s Central Reading Room, the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery in the Staller Center, and the Skylight Gallery in the Charles B. Wang Center. The crawl was followed by a lecture at the Wang Center, “Power, Protection, Prestige: Tribal Blankets of Southern China,” and ended with a reception.
Curators and artists were present at each venue to introduce the exhibits. Students, the wider university community, and visitors experienced one-of-a-kind creative works and participated in lively discussions.
The exhibition at the Simons Center Gallery, “Crossings,” featured photographs by Jean-François Dars taken between 2018-2020 to honor the Simons Center’s 10th Anniversary. They were originally compiled in Crossings, a unique publication that tells the story of the Center. “Touching Sounds” in the library’s Central Reading Room is an interactive exhibit created by linguists, artists, and musicians to make visual representations of speech accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired. The Alloway Gallery included artwork created by Master of Fine Arts students.
“DETACHMENT,” the exhibition at the Zuccaire Gallery, included new work by Stony Brook University’s graduating Master of Fine Arts students Dilge Dilsiz, Daniel Donato, and Heather Weston, featuring painting, sculpture, prints, photographs, and installation art. “Auspicious Dreams: Tribal Blankets from Southern China,” at the Wang Center featured precious, rarely seen Chinese textiles, specifically blankets made by South and Southwest Chinese tribes.
The Art Crawls unite the university’s galleries through a series of free, guided tours led by curators, and vary each semester. They are free and open to the public, and attendees could join in at any of the stops along the crawl. The Office of Creative Arts, of Student Activities and Engagement, in collaboration with the Charles B. Wang Center, Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Simons Center Gallery, Special Collections and University Archives of the University Libraries, and the Lawrence Alloway Gallery founded the Stony Brook University “Art Crawl” in 2015.
