Chen murder

Murder of The Model Minority
Artist: Kathine Chen

“Murder of The Model Minority” depicts a bloodied banana that is symbolic of Asian Americans and the rise of violence against Asian Americans, especially during and after the COVID pandemic. The banana is painted with red acrylic to emulate the appearance of bloodied bandages as a metaphor for the poor response to anti-Asian violence. The artist installed it by a side of the Charles B. Wang Center because of the center’s focus on Asian culture, and because the less-used side door is not readily apparent, representing the invisibility of Asian American challenges.
