The Long Island Explorium will host its eighth annual Maker Faire Long Island on Sunday, September 14, and for the first time, the popular event will be held at Stony Brook University.
This year’s event is bigger than ever, coinciding with the Explorium’s 20th anniversary, promising a day filled with invention, creativity and family fun.
Known globally as the “Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth,” Maker Faire is a celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and imagination that brings innovation to life.

More than 100 makers will gather at Stony Brook to inspire families, students and innovators with hands-on exhibits, performances, workshops and cutting-edge tech. More than 2,000 attendees from across the tri-state area are expected, featuring participation from SBU faculty, alumni and student groups.
Highlights include:
- Star Wars experiences: The 501st Legion with life-size set pieces, Saber Guild lightsaber training, and operational R2-D2 droids from the Long Island Droid Builders and the Long Island R2-D2 Builders Group.
- STEM hands-on fun: “Learn to Solder” with MythBusters Jr.’s Elijah Horland, Princesses with Powertools, FIRST Robotics teams and more.
- Stony Brook Solar Electric Boat: A student-led high-performance solar boat engineering team.
- SBU Geosciences Department: Interactive earth science experiences, including a working seismic sensor and a glowing fluorescent rock cave.
- Stony Brook iGEM (Cas-T Away): Synthetic biology research from SBU’s award-winning team.
“Maker Faire Long Island has always been about sparking curiosity and celebrating creativity,” said Lisa Collet Rodriguez, the event co-producer. “This year, with our move to Stony Brook University and the Explorium’s 20th anniversary, the Faire is reaching new heights — from fire-breathing dragons to Star Wars set pieces, and from robotics to sustainability. It is a day where everyone, from kids to seasoned engineers, can be inspired.”
