The nation’s preeminent online bookseller, Amazon, has opened an innovative pickup location on the Stony Brook campus that promises to streamline textbook access for students.

Amazon@StonyBrook offers a convenient location where students and the campus community can get their textbooks, and other college essentials, ordered through Amazon. The official opening took place November 3rd in the Frank Melville Jr. Library with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended University administrators, student leaders and Amazon representatives.
As the first university in New York State and one of only 15 in colleges in the United States to offer an Amazon pickup location on campus, Stony Brook University is at the cutting edge of providing innovative services to the students and campus community. “The opening of this pickup location marks a momentous day for our university, and is a direct and tangible symbol of the efforts being made here every single day to enhance the campus community and maximize the student experience for all our Seawolves,” said Cole Lee, President of the Undergraduate Student Government.
Affordability and convenience
Earlier this year, Amazon became the official bookstore for the university. After an extensive bid process, focused on providing affordability, efficiency and convenience for students, Amazon was selected as the right partner for Stony Brook.
“Textbook affordability is essential to the academic success of our students and saving students money on their course materials enables Stony Brook to continue to offer a great education at an affordable price,” said Dr. Peter Baigent, Vice President for Student Affairs and President of the Faculty Student Association.
Starting this fall, students were able to activate their benefits and order their course materials through the Amazon@StonyBrook portal stonybrooku.amazon.com, and have them shipped to their home or residence hall. Through this portal, course materials are identified with the Stony Brook shield logo, an easy way of letting students know which items are required textbooks for their class.

The pickup process is high-tech and was designed to fit students’ busy schedules. When ordering items through stonybrooku.amazon.com, students can choose Amazon@StonyBrook as their shipping address. When the order arrives, students receive an email or text message. When they’re ready to pick up their order, students click on the provided link which generates a barcode. Once at the pickup location, the students scan the barcode on one of the readers located at the self-service lockers. They can then pick up their order or go to the customer service desk to speak with an associate.
Amazon@StonyBrook Benefits
