Ellen Pikitch, PhD, Endowed Professor of Ocean Conservation Science at SoMAS, holds a bandtail pufferfish caught aboard the R/V Peconic during the standardized fish survey in Shinnecock Bay. The fish survey has been conducted during spring, summer and fall months for over a decade as part of the Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program. Recent increases in fish abundance detected by the survey is one reason that Shinnecock Bay was designated as a Hope Spot in June of 2022 by Mission Blue. The bandtail pufferfish is one of the tropical species that appear in Shinnecock Bay in late summer or fall due to the action of the Gulf Stream.
