Stony Brook, NY; Stony Brook University: URECA Researcher of the Roy Khair
Roy Khair

The URECA website regularly features students’ perspectives on research and/or creative activities. This month’s student is Shanawaj (Roy) Khair, a junior in the University Scholars program majoring in biology, and recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and the American Museum of Natural History Science Scholarship.

For the past two years Roy has been working with his mentor Dr. Ellen Li, Professor of Medicine, to explore the role of gut bacteria in colon cancer. Roy participated in the inaugural URECA Explorations in STEM research program in Summer 2013; his research in Summer 2014 with Dr. Li was supported by a URECA-UG Biology Alumni Award.

Last October Roy participated in the Gates Millennium Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, DC, where he interacted with legislators and gained experience in cancer advocacy. In December 2014 he represented Stony Brook undergraduate research at a SUNY Research Foundation Board Meeting. At SBU, Roy is an EOP/AIM tutor for general chemistry, biology and organic chemistry.

Roy was also a participant in the American Museum of Natural History Science Research Mentoring Program.
