The Stony Brook Men’s Rugby Team became national champions with a thrilling 21-20 win against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the 2014 American Collegiate Rugby Championships (ACRC) Bowl Series at the Rugby Athletic Complex in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 21-22.
“Great game. Very, very physical,” said Stony Brook Head Coach Jerry Mirro following the ACRC win. “Exactly what I expected out of West Virginia. They were, big, physical, and fit. It took all my boys to do to hang with them. To our credit, we served a lot of resiliency and we hung with them. I don’t think anyone else has hung with them this year and maybe that surprised them a little bit that we just kept coming back. I was very impressed with West Virginia and very impressed with my boys.”
The Seawolves finished with an undefeated season this fall, winning the Empire Conference Championship for the second consecutive year after a 50-15 victory over Binghamton on November 8. Co-Captain James Sheridan, emphasized the hard work put in by the team, saying “Over the past few years we have worked tirelessly to accomplish a goal as monumental as this one and we are thrilled that we were able to bring home a championship for the Stony Brook University Seawolves.”
