Two Stony Brook Students Win Prestigious NSF-GRFP Fellowships

Marisa PetruskyMarisa Petrusky (she,her)
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
Major: Physics
Undergraduate Research Advisors: Navid Vafaei-Najafabadi, Abhay Deshpande and Jan Bernauer

With interplanetary space travel and clean fusion power moving out of the realm of science fiction and into reality, Petrusky’s proposed research for graduate school involves how plasma interacts with itself via shockwaves (shocks), which is vital to society’s progress. In advancing the ability to simulate these shocks, she hopes to study how plasma evolves in the most extreme conditions and then use that knowledge toward applications such as optimizing materials development for fusion reactors or designing sustainable spacecraft.

Petrusky previously won an Undergraduate Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement in Community Service, Department of Physics and Astronomy Summer Research Award and WISE Researcher of the Year.
