A team of Stony Brook University commuter students joined Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and the Greening of 25A Committee at the annual spring cleaning of the Stony Brook Long Island Rail Road station on Saturday, April 27.

Approximately 45 volunteers turned out for the cleanup, including 30 SBU undergraduate students. The Office of Commuter Student Services managed volunteer registration and conducted outreach for the service project, along with the Division of Student Life.

Volunteers removed trash at the station along with tree limbs and other debris that remained after Superstorm Sandy. The group also helped improve the station by pruning bushes and installing new plantings.

“The students who took part in this service project had a great impact on this effort and represented Stony Brook beautifully,” said Emily Resnick, senior advisor for Commuter Student Services. “The students are enthusiastic about being involved in more projects like these, and additional opportunities for service learning.”

By the end of the cleanup, a dumpster was overflowing with trash and debris, and the Town of Brookhaven assisted with the removal of larger items.

Resnick said the student presence at the cleanup was enthusiastically received, adding, “This would be a great event for our campus to continue to be a part of.”
