Ceas chem e carThe Stony Brook University (SBU) Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) recently participated in the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Regional Chem-E-Car Competition. The SBU “7G” team finished first in the competition and has advanced to the AIChE National Competition in November 2022. In the past few years, the SBU Chem-E-Car team has made it to the finals four times. This is its fifth achievement and the first time the team placed first.

The Chem-E-Car competition is one of the AIChE’s main events and is a national competition for college students majoring in chemical engineering. The undergraduate students design a car powered by a chemical energy source, which can safely drive over a given distance and stop within a specified time limit. This year, the “7G” team used an aluminum-air battery as a power source and applied an iodine clock reaction as the stopping mechanism.

The members of the Chem-E-car team are:

Captain: John Calderon
Co-Captain: Stephen Galvin
Battery Team Lead: Stephen Galvin and Bryan Seo
Stopping Reaction Team Lead: Eeman Jawad
Circuit/Coding Team Lead: Joshua Huevel-Horwitz
Members: Maliha Ahmed, Nicholas Douglas, Jinyan Hu, Hannah Karkout, Glen Khlebutin, Sihan Li, Wilson Lee Liang, Sharon Lin, Amando Loo, Anjan Nandi and Hugo Ramos
Faculty Advisor: Steve Nitodas
