On a bright Saturday morning recently, nearly 30 Stony Brook University students donated their time to help beautify the area near the Long Island Rail Road station. Organized by Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and the Civic Association of the Setaukets and Stony Brook, the “Greening of 25A” is a time for sprucing up the neighborhood. It takes place each spring and fall. Stony Brook students joined the community volunteers to remove trash, branches and debris, filling dozens of bags. “Hyper-local service events like this cleanup give our students an opportunity to give back to our local community, work alongside our neighbors and local elected officials, and further understand the value of community service,” said Emily Resnick, assistant director for Commuter Student Services (CSS) and Off-Campus Living.

The CSS office has coordinated student volunteers to work with Hahn on the cleanup every semester since spring 2013. Also joining the beautification efforts was Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Valerie Cartright, who helped coordinate the tasks and worked alongside the volunteers.

In addition to hundreds of other volunteer activities, Stony Brook students will be performing community service at the West Meadow Beach cleanup on April 19 and the Cops Who Care charity bike ride on May 4.
