Students from Stony Brook University’s Undergraduate College of Science and Society (SSO) went to the Garden of Eve Organic Farm in Riverhead, New York, to harvest food for donation to the Long Island Cares food bank. The trip was part of the Hot Topics series, which all Science and Society students experience.

“The purpose of the Hot Topics events is to encourage students to engage with our College’s theme and get to know faculty, staff and their fellow students outside the classroom,” said Science and Society Advisor Katherine Kaiser. “The trip to the Garden of Eve engaged our students in community service and exposed them to the relationships between farming practices, the ancient cultural practice of gleaning and sustainability.”

Students worked side by side with SSO Faculty Director Anne Moyer, an associate professor in Stony Brook’s Department of Psychology, who arranged the trip. Chris and Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, owners of the Garden of Eve, gave a talk about harvesting food and gleaning. Then the students headed out to the fields where they hand picked vegetables from the vines that might have otherwise been left on the vine to decay. The students enjoyed giving a helping hand to feed the local community through the donation to Long Island Cares.
