Derek Rammelkamp, a graduate student in Stony Brook University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering, won the 40th annual Long Island Marathon for the men on May 5 with a time of 2:32:10. It was the first marathon that he had ever run. He was going to run the New York City Marathon in November 2012 but the race was cancelled due to Superstorm Sandy.

Rammelkamp, 23 of Centereach, ran with his twin brother, who placed fourth. Both ran track at Miller Place High School and at Wagner College, and are now students at Stony Brook.

More than 6,000 people raced in the three events — the 10K, half marathon and full marathon — with nearly 700 racing the full marathon.
