Each year, the Student Employee and Supervisor of the Year Awards, hosted by Stony Brook’s Career Center with support from the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship Services, recognizes stellar student employees and staff for their hard work and dedication.
The Student Employment program from the Career Center presents students and their supervisors with resources and support to provide students with experiential learning and development opportunities to prepare students for productive and successful careers.

During National Student Employment Week, seven students were awarded with a Distinction of Excellence award, and six were Grand Prize winners (undergraduate and graduate). The event kicked off with speeches by Dr. Richard J. Gatteau, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, and last year’s grand prize recipient, Caitlyn Bucco‘20, an Athletics Training major.
Tara Campbell, Career Center’s Student Employment Specialist, presented the different awards: Distinction of Excellence, Impact Award and the undergraduate and graduate Grand Prize to outstanding students. “It has been a pleasure to learn more about the amazing things our students are doing on campus each and every day through their work roles. Our students are learning how to communicate, how to solve problems, and how to be leaders, all in an ever-changing global society,” said Campbell.
The first place Graduate Grand prize winner was Nicole Chiuchiolo, graduate assistant at the Office of Commuter Services and Off-campus Living, and the Undergraduate Grand Prize was awarded to Val Kehoe, student employee at the Center for Prevention and Outreach.
Kehoe’s outstanding work was also acknowledged at a national level as they were recognized as the Regional Student Employee of the Year granted by the National Student Employment Administration (NSEA), an organization that supports programs for student employees and foments employment through research and professional opportunities. Val received a letter of congratulations, an award certificate, and a check for $250.
In addition, Joan Dickinson, Director of Community Relations, won the supervisor of the year award. She was nominated by her graduate student employee, Cohen Miles-Rath’19.
