Rick Gatteau, Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, has released a statement concerning the SUNY’s precautionary quarantine initiative and the safety of all students.
The statement reads:
As we continue to work with SUNY Central Administration to help SUNY students studying abroad in countries that have been designated by the US Department of State for Level 2 Travel Alerts and Level 3 Travel Warnings due to the spread of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus in those areas, Stony Brook Southampton campus is now welcoming four additional Study Abroad students returning from South Korea.
SUNY, under the direction of the New York State Department of Health, urged all program participants in the impacted countries to return to New York. Upon return, they will begin a 14-day precautionary quarantine either at home or at a designated residence hall on one of three designated SUNY campuses. Stony Brook Southampton is currently accommodating 22 students from the study abroad program in Italy — two days into their quarantine — and welcomes four more tonight. Our campus was selected as one of the locations for the precautionary quarantine because it has the facilities, services, technology, clinical and general staffing capabilities to accommodate NYS DOH precautionary quarantine guidelines. These four students were pre-screened and had no symptoms of the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. They will begin their 14-day precautionary quarantine period (as would any traveler returning from South Korea) upon arrival, as a preventative measure.
We are accommodating no more than three students per suite (each has an individual room) in residential buildings that were previously unoccupied in which there is no access permitted to enter the building, allowing for this precautionary isolation protocol. Each room contains a dedicated refrigerator and microwave. Food service will be delivered to each room following SUNY/NYS DOH guidance on food delivery procedures.
These protocols provide for no interaction with any other part of the campus. Teams from our Facilities and Services Department, the Provost’s Office, Division of Information Technology/Teaching and Learning Technology, and the Division of Student Affairs including Campus Residences, Counseling Services, Student Health Services, Student Support Team, Campus Life, Environmental Health & Safety, Transportation, and Campus Dining are all working together to ensure that these students are safely undergoing precautionary quarantine, will continue to receive academic support, and that they experience minimal personal discomfort through the course of the 14 days.
An expert team of clinicians are providing medical surveillance, including COVID-19 monitoring, as well as medical support for non COVID-19 issues, mental health and other unforeseen emergencies. As such we are strictly following the CDC and NYSDOH guidance and procedures related to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for staff, and custodial services. Should someone actually be diagnosed while in isolation and require transportation to a local healthcare facility such as Southampton Hospital or another health care provider, our EMS transport services are equipped to provide that transport. If external medical care is not needed, students will remain self-isolated and receive comfort care, which is the standard level of care for this cohort of patients.
Our first priority is the safety, health and welfare of all students, faculty, and staff who are currently residing on the Southampton campus, as well as for members of the broader community who live and work in the local area. We are working around the clock to ensure that contact with students who will undergo precautionary quarantine on campus will be limited to telehealth providers, and clinicians who are experienced and trained to care for people who may have been exposed to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus disease.
If you have any questions, please contact Student Affairs at studentaffairs@stonybrook.edu.
As part of the SUNY family, we welcome these students to our campus. We will make sure they are provided with every resource needed to make their precautionary quarantine period here at Stony Brook Southampton as comfortable as possible.

My daughter is a student there, her classes were basically at the hospital this semester (her final semester) and she is aware that they will be offered as online classes after Spring Break until the end of the year. Why has there been no official announcement about this yet? What about graduation? The lack of hands on, site based learning? I feel like this is a gross overreaction.

Same here. My son was told “stay informed” yet no direction as to how to stay informed and no information from any professors. He is a RA…no idea if he will be told to remain there so they can still offer housing. The lack of information is absurd!
What is being done about main campus at Stony Brook? How come classes in large groups are still taking place? Last week my son’s professor canceled a class due to “grave illness”, and he has had no further correspondence. This has caused much anxiety for him and us, and ai am sure for many others. Are classes at Stony Brook going to continue like nothing is happening?

Any number of other illnesses may, and most likely, would be the cause. It could even be a non-pathogen related illness, such as diverticulitis, which will put you in the hospital.
In this case, I would consider it bad fortune business as usual instead of COVID-19 until further notice. Of course, use good hygiene practices.
Seriously folks, all this quarantine stuff is a waste of time. This is no Captain Tripps from the stand, it’s the media reaction and cost of quarantine that’s doing more damage. It’s only ‘flu’ tier in power, not 99% fatality power. And it’s not like the existing flu shot ‘vaccine’ makes THAT much of a difference, so the lack of one for Covoid 19 is only just fanning the news, the price gouging – not it’s potency.
For most of us, it’ll come and go in a week or two with mild symptoms. Don’t shelter ppl ’cause otherwise it’s like kids who are allergic to peanuts… would not have been if allowed to get dirty. As always, getting a tiny bit sick doesn’t stop my business as usual (save for less cardio – but I never miss work, school if enrolled, etc) WE ARE THE VACCINE. 🙂
I can’t believe you just implied that kids with a peanut allergy have it because they weren’t allowed to get dirty……you have to know that, that is a ridiculous statement.
Indeed we are the vaccine, but we are also the host an carriers,.. those with immune suppressed disorders an diseases are at risk to not just be the flu like reaction but worse it could take their life,.. There are Tooo many people over 65 an Our veterans across street an in hospital with respiratory units that need this precaution…you might be fine,..but others may not
Why have classes officially been cancelled for the School of Social Welfare but no such announcement yet for the rest of the students? A letter was distributed Monday morning cancelling in-person classes for the remainder of the semester as of March 23rd for School of Social Welfare but absolutely no announcement made for the rest of the school. Students are incredibly concerned and would like an update as to what is happening, please!

Im a student on the west side of cam. News got released that after spring break on the 23rd all classes are going to be online. Im interested to see who gets to stay in their dorms .
I called the Provost’s office and they are still working on details of what’s going to happen for the rest of the semester. The advice I received was to have your student check their email.
My concern is packing up dorm items for out of state students if they won’t be returning. Will students be able to store items with Fed Ex’s help like in the summer? There are logistics that need to be sorted out.
I know Stony is doing their best to make decisions with a situation that has a lot of unknowns. I am as well.
I’m disappointed in the communication between administration and students. By not giving students a uniform plan across all departments, this is causing more hysteria across campus. Stony Brook Housing released a statement regarding Coronavirus and took it down minutes later. This comment is not geared towards the author(s) of this page, but as a student I have to ask, what is going on?
