Students Gain Valuable Career Insight at NBA Headquarters

For students, getting an inside look at the NBA Headquarters could be the opportunity of a lifetime. Add an alumni career panel into the mix, and it’s a real slam dunk.

On Wednesday, March 27, the Black and Latino Alumni Network and the Stony Brook Career Center invited 22 students to attend an exclusive career event at the NBA Headquarters in New York City: “Tapping Into Your Future You, NOW.” The program featured a panel including six alumni from all walks of life, who discussed their experiences as minorities in their chosen fields.

Alumni panelists included: Stephanie Baez ‘08, Imran Brown ‘13, Rashad Cureton ‘12, Halimah Famuyide ‘12, Neville Hall ‘13 and Fara Toussaint ‘04.

“It was inspiring to see so many successful black and latino alumni in one room,” said student athlete, Seba Nekhet. “I’m grateful to have so many stony brook alumni coming back to help guide me to keep the tradition built here at Stony Brook.”

From maintaining work-life balance to the importance of networking, the panel shared their own career journeys with the group.

“When I saw this opportunity, I felt like it was my obligation to attend. I remember how much I wish I had someone before me to serve as a role model,” said panelist Imran Brown ‘13.

This program was hosted by the Black and Latino Alumni Network, Chapter Leader and WNBA Referee Trainee Gerda Gatling ‘12 and Alumni Association Board Director, Morgan Cato ‘04 ‘05, NBA Director of Business Operations and League Operations.
