On April 24 Stony Brook University was presented with two awards from LiveOnNY, an organization that promotes donor registration of organs and tissue. The awards were presented by Karen Cummings of LiveOnNY on behalf of New York State Senator John Flanagan. The University received the first award for having the highest number of enrollments in New York State, and second award was in recognition of earning the top honor for three consecutive years.

“This recognition represents our campus community of care — our ability to collaborate to support a cause,” said  Kathleen Valerio, a health educator at Stony Brook. “More than 9,500 people in New York State are in need of a live-saving organ transplant and are on the national transplant waiting list. With more than 300 people added to the registration from the SBU drive, there’s potential to save over 2,500 lives as every organ donor has the potential to save eight lives!”
