Dr. Lauren Maloney, a chief resident in the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM), has received two national Emergency Medicine awards at the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Conference held in Las Vegas, NV, May 14 through May 17:

Resident Educator Award — Given annually to a senior emergency medicine resident who has demonstrated exceptional aptitude and passion for teaching during residency.

RAMS Excellence in Research Award — Given to an EM resident or a medical student who has had a role in the development of evidence-based medicine in the specialty.

These awards are given in recognition of exceptional contributions to emergency medicine and patient care through leadership, research, education, and compassion. Dr. Maloney is the first Stony Brook Medicine resident to ever receive these awards, a great achievement especially given the competition from four-year EM residency programs.

In addition to winning these impressive national awards, Dr. Maloney also completed a one-year resident editor appointment on the Academic Emergency Medicine Editorial Board.

Finally, the Department of Emergency Medicine recently received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for its Emergency Medical Services Fellowship, and Dr. Maloney will be the inaugural fellow starting in July. This is quite fitting, as she continues her education at Stony Brook after graduating from the School of Medicine in 2016, earning her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2012, and completing the Paramedic Program in 2009.
