Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, made the City & State New York inaugural Higher Education Power 50 list, which honors the 50 most powerful New Yorkers working in higher education. President Stanley placed in the top 10, coming in at number 9 on the prestigious listing.

City & State media organization is dedicated to covering New York’s local and state politics and policy. Coverage serves New York’s leaders every day as a trusted guide to the issues impacting the state. The publication offers commentary and analysis, weekly publications, daily e-briefs, events, podcast interviews and more.

The list — which identifies the most politically powerful members of New York’s colleges, universities and other centers of learning — is not another ranking of institutions of higher education. Ratings of the best schools or assessments of academic excellence are factors, but so too are each leader’s achievements, influence in policymaking, and connections to key city and state government officials.

“Under the leadership of Samuel Stanley Jr., Stony Brook University ushered in a ‘new era’ of economic development on April 1 when it consolidated its offices of research and economic development in an effort to align economic development efforts with research priorities. A respected biomedical researcher, Stanley serves on the Long Island REDC and the board of directors of the Long Island Association. Stony Brook reportedly generates $4.7 billion for the region every year.” City & State New York Higher Education Power 50
