Meet New People Through SBU’s “One Book, One Community” Program

Featured one book

Featured one bookStony Brook’s annual “One Book, One Community” program is a fun and innovative way to unite the university and neighboring communities through shared reading and conversation.

Through the program, readers will receive a free copy of a book (on a first-come, first-served basis) that explores important cultural, social and ethical issues.

One book 2021

The book selected for 2021’s reading is Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu. This New York Times bestseller and 2020 National Book Award winner explores race, pop culture, immigration and identity with heart, anger and dazzling wit. Yu brilliantly mingles screenplay and novel as he spotlights a Chinese-American actor seeking respect, love and professional success in the face of pop-culture stereotyping and broader social bias.

Participants the program may choose from a variety of free events that connect to the themes of the selected reading — an excellent way to meet people of different ages, backgrounds and experience, learn from each other, and promote dialogue around community values and goals.

All events are free and open to the public.

Community and campus partners include the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket, the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, the Charles B. Wang Center, the Office of Global Affairs and The China Center.
