16010Each year the School of Dental Medicine Alumni board receives nominations to recognize one of their outstanding alumni as the Distinguished Alumnus award (DAA) recipient.  This year, the board received a number of nominations, but unanimously selected Dr. Man Wai Ng ’89.

Dr. Ng is the Dentist in Chief at Boston’s Children’s Hospital which is ranked by US News and World report as the #1 hospital in the nation.  She is also Associate Professor of the Department of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Previously Dr. Ng was chief of the Department of Dentistry at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where she was also the director of the Residency Program in Pediatric Dentistry.  She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from Stony Brook in 1989, and her MPH degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed residency training in pediatric dentistry at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Ng was formerly a member of the HRSA Advisory Committee in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry (Title VII programs) and a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration. She currently serves as a consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation and is Vice President of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Ng is interested in public health, public policy, and advocacy to improve the oral health of children, especially on behalf of underserved children. Her research interests include preventing and managing early childhood caries and improving the education and training of medical and dental providers in oral health issues.

Historically, the DAA is presented at the annual White Coat Ceremony when the rising second year students are presented with their White Coats as a symbol that they are ready for clinical rotations.  Unfortunately, Dr. Ng could not attend the ceremony due to her exhausting schedule as Dentist in Chief at Boston Children’s Hospital. After Alumni board President, Dr. Tom Grandville introduced Dr. Ng as the Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Ng responded with her acceptance speech via video. In it, she outlined the seven reasons how her education at Stony Brook prepared her to be committed to patient care, pediatrics, and the under-served population. Congratulations Dr. Ng!
