David Conover to Receive National Award for Excellence in Marine Fishery Biology

ConoverDavid1 David O. Conover, PhD, Vice President for Research at Stony Brook University and a Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), has been named the 2015 recipient of the Oscar E. Sette Award by the American Fisheries Society (AFS). Dr. Conover will receive the award from the AFS’s Marine Fisheries Section at the AFS annual meeting in Portland, Ore., on August 16.

The award is given to an outstanding marine fishery biologist each year. According to the AFS, the criteria for each recipient is “sustained excellence in marine fishery biology through research, teaching, administration, or a combination of the three.”

“I am greatly honored to receive this career award, but the credit goes to the many Stony Brook students, postdocs, technicians, and faculty with whom I have worked over my 34 years at Stony Brook University,” said Dr. Conover.

Dr. Conover’s research centers on the ecology and evolutionary biology of fishes and fisheries science. A SoMAS faculty member since 1981, Dr. Conover launched the Fish Ecology Lab in 1985. He has held numerous leadership positions within the school, including his tenure as the Dean of SoMAS from 2003 to 2010. He served as the Director of the Division of Ocean Sciences at the National Science Foundation from 2010-2013.
