On Monday, February 4, Fotis Sotiropoulos, Dean of Stony Brook University’s (SBU) College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, briefed New York Congressional delegation staff in Washington, DC on SBU’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and quantum computing research. In addition, Sotiropoulos emphasized the need for a major investment in higher education in relation to AI research, education and workforce training in order for the US to lead the global AI race.

To advance AI research on campus and beyond, the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation was founded in 2018 within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences to serve as an intellectual hub to lead AI research and educational initiatives across the University, SUNY and New York State.

“Just as China’s government is investing billions in big data and AI with a clear vision to become the global AI leader by 2030, so, too, must the US if we hope to compete in this global race,” said Dean Sotiropoulos. “In fact, I would argue that any US infrastructure bill needs to include billions, if not trillions, for our technological infrastructure.”

During the meetings, Sotiropoulos also highlighted the crucial cutting-edge research being performed at SBU’s Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation in addition to quantum computing research.

Sotiropoulos met with representatives of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Lee Zeldin, Rep. Thomas Suozzi and Rep. Kathleen Rice. SBU’s Office of Government Relations continues to work closely with members of Congress and their staff to secure critical federal investments in higher education and scientific research.
