A FOX 5 NY segment titled “Nursing Students Inspired to Help Others Amid Pandemic,” which aired on Dec. 29, 2020, features both School of Nursing senior Brianna O’Sullivan and Annette B. Wysocki, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNYAM, Dean of the School of Nursing. The report focuses on a pandemic-inspired increase in nursing school applications. Sullivan spoke about being confident in her career choice, while Dean Wysocki said she anticipates an uptick in SON enrollment because the pandemic has motivated an interest in the nursing profession. In the Dec. 11, 2020 issue of Long Island Press, an article titled “Health Care Heroes Touch Long Islanders’ Lives in Covid-19 Pandemic” included Sofia Marie Reyes, director of Simulation Education and Clinical Skills Lab Undergraduate Studies. The article said that during the height of the pandemic Reyes assumed responsibility as a relief charge nurse in the first pop-up Covid Intensive Care Unit at Stony Brook University Hospital. Newsday featured SON in a Feb. 1, 2021 article titled “I Can Make a Difference: Nursing, Medical School Applications Are Rising Amid the Pandemic” and an accompanying video. Dean Annette Wysocki is referenced talking about an increase in enrollments in the accelerated one-year and the undergraduate programs. Nursing student Ashley Romeo is also mentioned and is interviewed at length in the video. WCBS NEWSRADIO 880 aired a spot Feb. 4, 2021 reporting on “Medical Schools, Nursing Programs See Jump in Applications Amid Pandemic.” SON student Philip Massaro is quoted as saying the pandemic has reinforced his decision to go into nursing.
