On June 12, 25 fourth graders from Tuckahoe Elementary School became marine scientists for the day when they joined Christopher Paparo, director of Stony Brook Southampton’s Marine Sciences Research Center, aboard the RV Peconic for an exploration of Shinnecock Bay. During their interactive expedition the students got hands-on experience using the same equipment Stony Brook researchers use to study Long Island’s fascinating marine estuary. They tested water salinity, temperature and turbidity; they examined the bottom sediments; and they sampled some of the flora and fauna that are native to Shinnecock Bay.
