HenrettaMelissaMelissa Henretta has been appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and to the medical staff at Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Henretta brings expertise in minimally invasive surgery to Stony Brook’s Division of Gynecologic Oncology. She is experienced in the da Vinci® S HD Surgical System, a robot-assisted surgical platform that extends a surgeon’s capabilities and offers the patient the potential benefits of less pain, less blood loss, and a quicker return to normal activities following surgery.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is the only academic subspecialty gynecologic oncology practice in Suffolk County. The Division members have three overlapping goals: 1) To provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for women with known or suspected gynecologic cancers, complicated gynecologic surgical cases, and selected pre-invasive conditions; 2) To conduct research into the development and treatment of these cancers; and 3) To educate healthcare professionals and the public about gynecologic cancers and pre-cancerous conditions.

In her clinical practice, Henretta treats all gynecologic cancers, including cancers of the ovary, uterus, vulva, vagina, endometrium, and cervix. She also works with underserved patients in Suffolk County to ensure they receive appropriate medical care. She will see patients at Stony Brook’s Cancer Center.

Henretta’s research interests include the hereditary predisposition of gynecological cancer and the prevention of hospital readmissions. She has been published in leading medical journals, including Gynecologic Oncology, and has presented at national meetings in her field.

A graduate of the honors program at the College of the Holy Cross, Henretta received her M.D. degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and her master’s degree in public health from the University of Virginia. She completed her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Ohio State University Medical Center and pursued her fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Virginia. She is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
