Fazel Khan has been appointed assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and will serve on the medical staff of Stony Brook University Medical Center.

Khan, a native Long Islander, is the only orthopaedic oncologist on Long Island who is a full-time faculty member at an academic medical center. At Stony Brook he will practice at the Cancer Center and the Joint Replacement Center. He comes to Stony Brook following clinical and research fellowships in musculoskeletal surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and an orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. While at these institutions, Khan was involved in the treatment of both common and highly complex surgical problems in varied patient populations.

“Dr. Khan has trained at some of the premier institutions in the country in his specialty and subspecialty,” said Lawrence Hurst, professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics. “His pioneering work in the use of robotics and computer navigation in orthopaedic surgery not only will offer new options to Stony Brook patients but also has the potential to transform the field of orthopaedic surgery.”

In his practice Khan focuses on both benign and malignant tumors of bone and soft tissues of the upper extremities, lower extremities and pelvis. He also specializes in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, including total and partial hip and knee replacement surgery.

Khan is engaged in pioneering research work in the robotic resection of bone tumors using novel tools and techniques that he invented and designed in collaboration with his mentors. He has received numerous research grants from major organizations such as the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Clinician-Scientist Development Program, as well as secured sponsorship from leading industrial companies in the field in order to help bring this novel technology to market.

Prior to his training at the Mayo Clinic and Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Khan received his M.D. degree at State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, where he graduated as valedictorian of a medical school class of 199 students. He attended Downstate as part of a prestigious combined seven-year B.A./M.D. program with Brooklyn College. He has done additional coursework and training at Harvard University, Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania.
