He’s been spotted in Seattle; in Chicago; Kennebunkport, Maine; at a Yankee game; and at a beach in Connecticut. There have also been Wolfie sightings in more exotic locales such as India, Singapore, Serbia, London, and Mexico.
Wolfie, Stony Brook’s mascot, is showing up everywhere that his fans are as a result of a new campaign to increase his visibility and boost school pride and spirit, called “Where in the World is Wolfie?”
A plush toy version of Stony Brook’s mascot is a hot-selling item, and with a growing fan base of 146 on Twitter (he’s had more than 1,700 hits since the tracking began in November 2008) and 3,470 Facebook friends, Wolfie enthusiasts are taking him with them everywhere and recording his visits digitally.
The idea mimics the Flat Stanley children’s literature character’s itinerant nature but was actually inspired by a featured article in Currents that highlighted the sojourns of the American School of London’s plush mascot, Eagle.
Andrea Lebedinski, coordinator of merchandising and branding in Athletics, said the campaign has officially launched as part of the Spirit and Pride initiative this fall as a Facebook Fan Page, where participants can upload their pictures with Wolfie. The initiative is a collaboration among the Dean of Students Office, the Department of Athletics, and the Office of Communications. There is also a Google map, which pinpoints all of the locations Wolfie has visited.
