Recreation and Wellness was recently highlighted in a national publication for successfully implementing wellness initiatives to help college students lead healthier lifestyles.
The article was published in Campus Rec Magazine, the leading national trade magazine focusing on college and university recreation centers. It emphasizes the remarkable development that the department has accomplished in a short period “implementing a wide variety of wellness programs into its offerings in just a year” and providing a more holistic approach to student well-being.
The article sheds light onto the cooperation of health professionals and the Recreation and Wellness staff for turning the Walter J. Hawrys Recreation Center from just being a place to exercise into a place where students are able to improve themselves both physically and mentally.
In addition to a walk-in clinic and registered dietitian appointments, many services for students have been added such as low-risk health screenings and referrals, learning opportunities for nursing students, such as health screenings with staff supervision, anonymous HIV testing, suicide prevention workshops, sexual awareness campaigns, blood and organ donor drives, and many more.
