As the campus community continues to recover from the widespread effects of Hurricane Sandy, there are various ways you can receive help if needed or provide help if you can do so. Donate to the Hardship Fund: The Stony Brook Hardship Fund, which was established through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), can help Stony Brook University community members affected by a sudden and unexpected event. Historically, this Fund has only been available to faculty and staff. Now, by request of President Stanley, the Fund has been opened to students in need as well. The Hardship Fund is entirely dependent on contributions from members of the campus community at Stony Brook. Contributions (may be tax deductible) are both welcome and needed and can be made by bringing a cash donation to the Stony Brook Foundation or by sending a check payable to: The Stony Brook Foundation, Hardship Fund (Account Number: 296240), Stony Brook Foundation Business Office , 230 Administration Bldg. Community Service and Service Learning provides a guide to participating in relief efforts and has set up a mailing list for those interested in getting involved.
CSEA Local 614 Women’s Committee is collecting clothing, canned or boxed goods, toiletries, and gift cards for distribution to storm victims. Drop off items at the Local CSEA office, HSC Room 066, or Computer Science Center Room 2601. For more information call: (631) 632-6575 or (631) 634-3680.

Stony Brook Athletics will be accepting non-perishable canned food items at all basketball games in November. Those who make a donation will receive a voucher for a free game ticket to a future women’s basketball home contest for each item they donate. There will be a limit of 4 free tickets per donation and game choices will be listed on reverse side of voucher. Please bring all non-perishable donations to the Indoor Sports Complex where drop off boxes will be located at the entrance to Pritchard Gymnasium and all items will be distributed to those in need as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has chosen to designate items collected during their annual food drive to organizations that will directly assist Long Islanders affected by Hurricane Sandy. The SAAC is a leadership organization made up of more than 40 SBU varsity student-athletes who volunteer their time and effort throughout the year to support educational and leadership opportunities that help others. The student-athletes represent all 20 Stony Brook varsity teams. The Food Drive is one of SAAC’s annual events through which they have collected thousands of items which have been donated to local food banks and charities.
Stony Brook University Hospital is accepting donations of clean, gently used clothing, blankets and non-perishable food items for hospital staff members in need. Donations are being accepted now through November 16, Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 8 pm in the Marketplace Cafeteria Club Room on Level 5 of the Hospital. Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps is a New York State Certified Ambulance Corporation serving campus and the surrounding community, employing the services of 70 to 90 dedicated volunteers.
