A provostial task force has recommended a set of four programs in fulfillment of President Stanley’s $1 million initiative aimed at raising Stony Brook University’s profile in the Arts, Humanities and Lettered Social Sciences (AHLSS). Announced by President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. in his 2013 “State of the University” address, the initiative is in addition to faculty lines and funds already provided by the Provost’s Office to support innovative scholarship and education programs in these areas.
The proposals are as follows:
Graduate Fellowships and Faculty Research Program: This program provides funding and mentoring to six graduate students in AHLSS that will take them beyond their guaranteed funding. The Graduate School will oversee the application process, and will set up a special committee to review and select the fellowship winners. Calls for nominations and applications will be forthcoming from the Graduate School.
Humanities Institute Faculty Fellowships: This program will provide three fellowships to Stony Brook University faculty. Two of these fellowships are earmarked for assistant professors and one is for either associate or full professors. The fellowship applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Humanities Institute Executive Council. A call for applications and qualification requirements will be forthcoming from the Humanities Institute.
Guest Artists Residency Program: This program will allow Departments and Programs in the visual and performing arts the opportunity to bring two artists in residency to Stony Brook. Nominations and applications will be reviewed by a committee appointed by the Provost comprised of faculty from the visual and performing arts departments. A call for applications and nominations will be forthcoming.
President’s Faculty Travel Award: This program will fund twenty-five travel awards for faculty who will be presenting papers at either national or international conferences. Applications will be reviewed by a subcommittee of the Faculty in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. A call for applications will be forthcoming.
“I have enthusiastically embraced these initiatives for their potential to promote innovative research and creative endeavors by both faculty and graduate students and make an impact on scholarship that can be measured and evaluated,” President Stanley said.
“I wish to gratefully acknowledge the members of the task force and the Provost for their hard work and innovative program ideas.”
