
Poet Patricia Spears Jones will give the Kofi Awoonor (’72) Memorial Reading, which will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at 4 pm in The Poetry Center on the second floor of the Humanities Building. This event is free and open to the public.
Awoonor, a renowned Ghanaian poet and former diplomat, was among those killed in the Westgate shopping mall attack in Kenya this past September.
Patricia Spears Jones was named by Essence.com as one of its “40 Poets They Love” in 2010. She is author of the poetry collections Painkiller, Femme du Monde and The Weather That Kills, among others. Jones’ art, theater, poetry and music essays, reviews and interviews can be found in print and online at www.tribes.org; Bomb, The Poetry Project Newsletter, Black Issues Book Review, The Boston Globe, Essence, and www.Essence.com. She has also written catalog essays for diverse artists including Jane Dickson, Rhonda Schaller and Rick (Richard J.) Powell. “Cosmopolitan in Brooklyn” ran from 2006-2009 in Calabar Magazine and she is a contributing editor for Bomb Magazine.
A Q&A will follow the reading. Books will be on hand for purchase and signing by the poet.
