Stony Brook’s Wellness Walking Program kicks off this semester, led by US Olympian and Long Island native Maria Michta, ranked 20th among female race walkers worldwide and best female walker in the country. Starting on Monday, January 25, sessions will be held at the Walter Hawrys Campus Recreation Center as follows: Mondays, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, and Wednesdays/Fridays, 12 pm to 1 pm.

Students, faculty and staff can improve and maintain their physical health, learn the technique of race walking, build a cardio base, and set individual fitness goals.

Program participants will be encouraged to enter local race walking competitions and possibly high-level elite races at regional and national levels. Collegiate athletes can compete in the junior category (under 20 years old) and open divisions, while staff and faculty can compete in the master age and open categories. Walkers of all levels are welcome.
