Stony Brook University’s 24th annual Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) Closing Celebration will be held on Tuesday, October 29, at 4:30 pm in the Charles B. Wang Center Zodiac Gallery.
The HHM committee will recognize faculty, staff and students who are community advocates, leaders and outstanding academics in the Stony Brook community in the areas of Excellence, Leadership and Community Service. The committee will also confer the titles “Madrina” and “Padrino” (Godmother/Godfather) on faculty/staff members who have served as leaders and mentors to students in the Hispanic community at Stony Brook.
The evening begins with dinner, an awards presentation and silent auction, followed by a Hispanic Heritage Concert from 6 pm to 7 pm in the Staller Center Recital Hall. The concert features performances by Lluis Capdevila on jazz piano, Isaac Lausell on classical and jazz guitar, and Pablo Lavandera on classical piano. Capdevila is a DMA student in Stony Brook’s Department of Music focusing on jazz piano performance. He is a student of Visiting Professor and trombonist Ray Anderson. Lausell is an alumnus of Stony Brook’s Department of Music where he studied with artist-in-residence and guitarist Jerry Willard and Ray Anderson. He teaches guitar and jazz performance at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Lavandera, an SBU alumnus and Fulbright Scholar, is an artist-in-residence at Stony Brook. He teaches piano, chamber music and an accompanying class at the undergraduate level.
