Governor Andrew Cuomo visited the campus of Stony Brook University to present his plans for education and job growth, which includes creating a partnership between academia and business statewide, when he delivered key components of his State of the State address at the University’s Charles B. Wang Center on Thursday, February 28.

In his welcoming remarks, President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD said, “Education is the engine in growing the economy and the SUNY system and our university plays a major role in this state. We are educating and preparing our students to join the workforce.”

Stony Brook University Biomedical Engineering graduate student Danielle Green is an example of the University’s excellence in tech transfer. Green works in Professor Clinton Rubin’s Biomedical Engineering lab studying the effects of low-level stimulation on bone marrow stem cell rejuvenation in patients with poor bone quality due to chemotherapy and other causes. Rubin and Green are also collaborating with Marodyne Medical to bring Low Intensity Vibration to the clinic for non-drug therapies and injury.

“My goal is to contribute to a new business and product in New York State,” Green said “…The ultimate goal of these products [developed at Stony Brook] is to improve the quality of life not just for New Yorkers, but for everyone.”

Following Green’s comments in front of a capacity crowd in the Wang Theatre, she had the honor of introducing Governor Cuomo.

“In so many ways, the challenges that the state faces are being addressed here at Stony Brook,” said Cuomo. He then outlined his plan to grow regional economies like Long Island’s in his “New York Rising” presentation. His plan includes the Regional Economic Development Councils that will continue to bring together entrepreneurs, academics and business leaders and the new “Technology Transfer initiative,” designed to foster new businesses in the State.

“In New York, we have the schools producing the [new technology] ideas. We have the young people, we have the brilliance, but they don’t become businesses in New York, they leave New York to become business,” Cuomo said. “That is the challenge.”

Governor Cuomo closed his remarks with praise for the university’s accomplishments in tech transfer.  “Stony Brook has some very high examples in this regard. When you look at the economies that are doing well in this country, or around the world for that matter, the basic common denominators are these new high tech ideas that are basically coming out of academic institutions of higher learning.”

“The best thing we can do is provide great career paths for young people,” said Cuomo.
