Living off campus — whether at home or elsewhere in the community — provides a unique college experience that calls for a tailored set of resources. With the recently expanded and improved services available to commuters, students choosing to live off campus have more resources to help connect to the University and to one another.

The Office of Commuter Student Services has been serving the University’s undergraduate commuter student population for many years. The office recently changed its name to include Off Campus Living — CSS/OCL, for short — to further address the needs of commuter students who rent in the local community. The office, located in Room 225 of the Student Activities Center, is a comprehensive, centralized location for all things related to commuter life. “The staff in CSS/OCL is dedicated to helping our students connect and succeed here at Stony Brook,” said Assistant Director Emily Resnick. From places to meet on campus to meal plan options to checklists for safe housing, the CSS/OCL office provides commuter students with tools that support student success and an enriched student experience.

CSS/OCL has launched a robust website —at — with easy-to-access information about campus life and issues of concern specific to commuters.  Its services and resources include information about social and educational programming, on- and off-campus transportation links, hyperlocal community service projects, and information about finding a peer mentor through the Commuter Assistant Program.

In addition, the new website includes a portal for Off Campus Living, offering support and resources targeted to students renting in the neighborhoods of Long Island. The OCL pages provide renters’ checklists, a guide to tenants’ rights, information on town codes and guidelines for being a good neighbor.
