Author Elizabeth Bettina will discuss her book, It Happened in Italy: Untold Stories of How the People of Italy Defied the Horrors of the Holocaust, on Sunday, February 21, at 2:30 pm at the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. A reception will follow with the opportunity to purchase and have books autographed by the author. All are invited.

While visiting in her family’s village in Campagna, Italy, Bettina stumbled onto this story of the Jewish people who were in Italy during the Holocaust. She will share how this discovery impelled her to write what she found to be the untold story of It Happened in Italy.

The survivors have given Bettina their personal pictures and documents that show the story and are only available in the book. There are pictures of Jews in Italian concentration camps, praying in a synagogue, playing the guitar and saxophone, and more. These pictures reinforce what the survivors claim, that they were treated with dignity and respect and were not in labor camps or death camps. They reveal the comparison between the German camps and the Italian camps.

Bettina will also present a small segment of the documentary, Italy and the Holocaust: The Hidden Story, which features survivors described in her book.

The Center for Italian Studies is hosting the presentation. Call 632-7444 for additional information.
