7Bus offers service between SBU and New York City.

7Bus, a Long Island-based transit company offering service between the Stony Brook campus and New York City, has added a new departure to accommodate the class schedules of students attending Summer Sessions.

Responding to student feedback, the company has scheduled a late bus leaving campus at 9:50 pm from the SAC transit circle. This new run to New York City is designed to meet the needs of students in Summer Session classes ending at 9:30 pm. 7Bus also offers early routes from New York City that arrive in time for morning classes. For more information, consult the 7Bus schedule online.

7Bus offers westbound transportation between the Student Activities Center, Rego Park/Queens, 40th Street & 3rd Avenue, 50th Street & 3rd Avenue and 60th Street & 3rd Avenue. For eastbound travelers, bus stops in New York City are located on Lexington Avenue on 40th, 47th, and 59th streets, followed by stops in Rego Park/Queens and the Student Activities Center. The Rego Park/Queens destination allows passengers the ability to connect with multiple subways to travel to locations in Queens and Brooklyn.

7Buses are equipped with free WiFi, plasma monitors, reclining leather seats, a newsstand library and personal power outlets. Travel time between SBU and New York City is estimated to take between 90 and 120 minutes each way; one-way fare ranges from $7 to $15 depending on demand and when a ticket is purchased.

The idea to provide bus transportation between the Stony Brook campus and New York City was initially raised by students who participated in the Transportation & Parking Advisory Group during the spring 2013 semester. The concept was reinforced when the Department of Transportation & Parking Operations and Office of Sustainability surveyed students earlier this semester. The survey received more than 1,900 responses; more than 70 percent of them were in favor of adding such a service.

7Bus tickets are only available via online reservation and reservations are required in order to board the bus and use the service. 7Bus is separate from existing transportation services offered by the University.
