Swiss-born Othmar Ammann moved to the United States in 1904 and built some of the most famous bridges in New York state and in the country. He assisted in the design of bridges for the Susquehanna Railway, Buffalo and Rochester. He also planned the construction of Hell’s Gate Bridge, George Washington Bridge and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. He directed construction of the Triboro Bridge, Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
