STONY BROOK, NY, October 25, 2022 – Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has achieved national recognition as one of America’s Best Hospitals in three specialty care areas, according to new research released by Healthgrades. SBUH is one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery, now for 2 years in a row (2022-2023). SBUH is one of only two hospitals in New York State to be named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care for 9 years in a row (2015-2023). SBUH is also proud to be the only hospital in the state to be one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care for 8 years in a row (2016-2023).

“This accomplishment reflects Stony Brook University Hospital’s consistently outstanding clinical outcomes in cardiac and stroke care, and our unwavering dedication to our patients,” said Hal Paz, MD, MS, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Medicine and Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Stony Brook University. “I’m delighted that year after year our hospital’s Heart Institute and Cerebrovascular and Comprehensive Stroke Center continue to provide a level of care few hospitals anywhere can match.”

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals for specialty care. This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between America’s Best hospitals for specialty care and hospitals that did not receive a distinction. From 2019-2021, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery Award have, on average, a 56.0% lower risk of dying than those treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.* Similarly, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care Award have, on average, a 40.2% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
