Carol Gomes Named 2013-2014 Stony Brook Alumni Association President
New Slate of AA Executive Board Members Also Announced

STONY BROOK, N.Y., JULY 23, 2013 – Carol Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, ’90, ’97 was elected President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association for the 2013-2014 academic year. A twice graduate of Stony Brook University, she is also currently employed by the University as Chief Operating Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) and Associate Director for Neurosciences.
Gomes received her master’s degree in healthcare management and administration from the School of Health Technology and Management in 1990 followed by a master’s degree in management and policy from the College of Business in 1997. Prior to Stony Brook, she completed her undergraduate education at Long Island University in 1984.
A longtime SBU employee, Gomes first joined the staff of SBUH in 1985. In her current role as Chief Operating Officer, Gomes is administratively responsible for Suffolk County’s only tertiary care, academic medical center. She is also a frequent lecturer for both Stony Brook’s School of Health Technology and Management and the College of Business.
Working in healthcare for over 28 years, Gomes holds certifications as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, is a Certified Practitioner of Healthcare from the National Association for Healthcare Quality, and has numerous certifications in laboratory sciences and management from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She also has received many leadership awards, such as The Long Island Business News Healthcare Heroes Award in Achievements in Healthcare.
“I am thrilled to serve the University in this exciting new way, and look forward to the opportunity to meet more alumni, develop innovative programming, and collaborate with such a dedicated executive team,” said Gomes. The new executive slate includes Robert W. Stafford, ’72, ’82, President-Elect; Bedel Saget, ’88, Vice President; Ernest G. Canadeo, ’77 Treasurer; and Robert J. deBrauwere, Esq., ’87, Secretary.
The Stony Brook Alumni Association seeks to reach, serve, and engage all Stony Brook alumni, students, and friends to foster a lifelong connection between the University and its graduates, and to provide the University with goodwill and support. The Association celebrates the achievements of students, faculty, and fellow alumni, and works to ensure that Stony Brook University stands with the finest universities in the world.
The organization hosts a variety of programming including reunions, professional development seminars and networking events, and provides scholarship awards such as the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to hardworking students who are making an impact in their programs and face financially challenging needs.
“Year after year, Carol has a proven track record for success here at Stony Brook. We are excited to have her bring her talents and ideas to the Presidency of the Stony Brook Alumni Association and we’re confident that she will be a great leader,” said Matthew Colson, Executive Director of Stony Brook University Alumni Relations.
Carol Gomes and husband Lyle Gomes, also employed by Stony Brook University as Vice President for Finance and Chief Budget Officer, live with their three children in Mt. Sinai, New York.
