Javed Butler, MD, MPH, Chief of Cardiology and Co-Director of the Stony Brook University Heart Institute, has been named to the newly established Cardiology Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The role of the board is to define and assess the full scope of practice certification guidelines for the ABIM specialty.
Cardiology is the 11th Specialty Board established by the ABIM as part of its national governance model. The Cardiology Board works closely with ABIM Cardiology exam committees including those for cardiovascular disease, adult congenital heart disease, advanced heart failure & transplant cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, and interventional cardiology.
“There are few professional responsibilities more important than making sure that physician competency is judged appropriately,” said Dr. Butler. “I look forward to working on this important initiative and am humbled by the opportunity to serve on this national committee.”
Dr. Butler shares his duties on the board with professors of cardiology from schools of medicine around the country. The board consists of 12 physician members and two public members, one from an inter-professional team and the other from a patient/caregiver perspective.
