Nationally Recognized Researcher and Educator Named Chair of Stony Brook Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology

STONY BROOK, N.Y., October 3, 2014 – Tong Joo (TJ) Gan, MD, MHS, FRCA, an award-winning researcher in post-operative recovery and educator, has been named Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook Medicine, announced Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine.
“Dr. Gan’s research has made a major impact on understanding a wide range of topics within anesthesiology, such as in acute pain management and post-operative nausea,” said Dr. Kaushansky. “His investigative insight and clinical knowledge will make him an excellent departmental leader and educator.”
Dr. Gan will oversee one of Stony Brook Medicine’s largest clinical departments, which includes 12 divisions, such as acute pain, pediatric anesthesia, and ambulatory center anesthesia. The Department of Anesthesiology also has a robust research program featuring basic, translational and clinical research, as well as a long-standing residency program at Stony Brook Medicine.
Before coming to Stony Brook, Dr. Gan was Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chairman for Clinical Research and Faculty Development at the Duke University School of Medicine. He also was a faculty member at Duke Clinical Research Institute and a Senior Research Fellow at the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine.
Dr. Gan has been principal investigator or co-investigator for more than 100 clinical trials and has been invited to deliver more than 200 national and international lectures on his clinical work and research. His research has been reported in 180 peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 20 book chapters, and has explored the benefits and adverse effects of anesthesia and analgesia, acute pain management, prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting and other opioid related side effects, fluid management, hemodynamic monitoring and perioperative enhanced recovery strategy.
For his research discoveries, Dr. Gan has received many awards, including the Society for Technology for Anesthesia Annual Innovative Award, the International Anesthesia Research Society Clinical Scholar Research Award, and Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia Young Investigator Award.
Originally from Malaysia, Dr. Gan received his medical degree from the London Hospital Medical College. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology and is a fellow of both the Royal College of Anaesthetists of England and the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. Dr. Gan is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the International Anesthesia Research Society.
