STONY BROOK, NY,
JUNE 11, 2014— U.S. News & World Report ranked Stony Brook Children’s Hospital as a top provider of care in the specialty area of nephrology in the new 2014-15 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. Stony Brook Children’s was the only Long Island children’s hospital to be ranked as a center for children with serious kidney disorders.

“Ranking in the top 50 in the country for pediatric nephrology is a key accomplishment for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital,” said Margaret McGovern, Professor and Chair Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Physician-In-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “These results reflect our ongoing focus on providing the best in quality of care, advancements and innovation in medicine, and patient safety in all of the pediatric specialty programs offered at Stony Brook Children’s.”

Scores are based on patient outcomes, care-related resources available, a clinical questionnaire to 183 pediatric hospitals and a survey of 450 pediatric specialists and subspecialists asking where they would send the sickest children in their specialty, setting aside location and expense. In the area of nephrology, survival following kidney transplant, biopsy complications and overall infection prevention were among the kinds of data collected.

In order to help families of sick children find the best medical care available, U.S. News & World Report ranks the top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities each year in cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.

For children with kidney disease and disorders, the Division of Pediatric Nephrology at Stony Brook Children’s offers the most advanced treatment available in Suffolk County. Not only is it the only Suffolk County hospital to perform renal transplants for children, it also is home to one of the largest pediatric nephrology programs on Long Island, seeing approximately 1,400 patients annually.
