STONY BROOK, N.Y., June 11, 2014 – Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, has been named Stony Brook Medicine’s inaugural Associate Dean for Ambulatory Operations, announced Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences, and Dean of the School of Medicine.
In this newly created position, Dr. McGovern will help establish and implement a strategic plan designed to expand and enhance the effectiveness of Stony Brook Medicine’s ambulatory, or outpatient practices, and coordinate the multiple caregivers so many patients require. She will oversee quality improvement and patient safety in these settings, and enhance the quality of patients’ experiences.
“Bringing our ambulatory care practices to the next level of excellence is our highest priority; not only will this initiative lead to better patient outcomes, but it will enhance our patients’ level of satisfaction and participation in their care,” said Dr. Kaushansky. “Dr. McGovern’s extensive management experience, and her knowledge of best clinical practices in the academic environment makes her enormously qualified to create and serve in this new role at Stony Brook Medicine.”
Dr. McGovern will work closely with School of Medicine department chairs to evaluate current departmental outpatient practices, including but not limited to assessment of clinical space, practice support and scheduling policies, and the development of real-time practice reports designed to help departments enhance both patient and physician satisfaction.
“The faculty practice at Stony Brook Medicine includes over 600 full-time faculty who are experts in their fields,” said Dr. McGovern. “In the new role articulated by Dr. Kaushansky, I will be working with an incredibly talented group of physician, nursing and administrative leaders to further enhance the outpatient environment and support the strategic growth of clinical services that will meet the needs of the patients we serve.”
Dr. McGovern came to Stony Brook in 2007 when she was appointed Chair of the Department of Pediatrics. A nationally recognized geneticist and medical educator, Dr. McGovern has led the clinical, research, and educational mission of one of Stony Brook Medicine’s largest academic departments. When Stony Brook Children’s Hospital was established in 2010, Dr. McGovern was named the hospital’s first Physician-in-Chief. She has spearheaded the growth of Stony Brook Children’s, which includes the establishment of a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department and expansion of services in 30 specialties with some 200 practicing physicians.
A native of Long Island, Dr. McGovern is a Distinguished Alumna of Stony Brook University. Previously she served at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine as Professor of Human Genetics and Pediatrics as well as Vice Chair of the Department of Human Genetics. Dr. McGovern has been recognized in Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors lists for her work in clinical genetics. She was named “Woman of the Year” in 2011 by the Village Times Herald for her expertise, passion and insistence on high standards in the care of pediatric patients.
