High School Seniors Recognized for Time and Talent as Volunteers

High School Seniors Recognized for Time and Talent as Volunteers

STONY BROOK, NY,
 November 13, 2008 – Stony Brook University Medical Center recently paid tribute to its Junior Volunteers at 

a special awards dinner. More than 150 Junior Volunteers were awarded certificates or pins for their hours of service to the hospital. Three volunteers, Veda Talanki, Michael Nunez and Amanda Brennan (pictured respectively left to right) each received the Excellence In Service Award.

 

Ms. Talanki is a junior at Ward Melville High School who volunteers at the Stony Brook University Heart Center reception desk where she greets visitors and lends assistance to those who are waiting for patients while they are undergoing cardiac testing.

Ms. Brennan is a senior at Sachem High School North. She volunteers in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where she has completed over 280 hours of volunteer service.

Mr. Nunez is a senior at Centereach High School. He volunteers in the Department of Surgery where he helps organize patient charts.

The Junior Volunteer Program at Stony Brook University Hospital offers young men and women between the ages of 14 and 17 a chance to serve their community while they explore career options. Stony Brook University Medical Center is currently recruiting volunteers for all shifts and assignments, such as helping to organize blood drives with the Blood Bank, patient transportation, and staffing the Auxiliary Gift Shop. Parking is validated for all volunteers, and all volunteers receive a snack voucher for every three-hour shift worked.
