Stony Brook University Medical Center Designated As Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
STONY BROOK, N.Y., November 5, 2010– Stony Brook University Medical Center’s Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).
To achieve designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the Stony Brook Breast Care Center underwent peer-review evaluations, which were conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.
The designation means that Stony Brook has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.
“We are pleased to be able to offer the very best in imaging technology and services at our center for the early detection and staging of breast cancer and to receive this recognition from the American College of Radiology,” says Roxanne B. Palermo, M .D., Acting Chief of Breast Imaging, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology at SBUMC.
The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists. Its programs focus on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.
The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center is adjacent to Stony Brook University Medical Center at 3 Edmund D. Pellegrino Road.
