Stony Brook University “Fall Classic” Benefits Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital

Fraternity Softball Tournament Has Raised More Than $15,000

STONY BROOK, N.Y.,
September 28, 2010 – Stony Brook University students from 12 Greek organizations and two campus life organizations will be swinging for the fences at the 3rd Annual Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity Charity Softball Tournament on October 2. This year’s tournament benefits the Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital, the only university-based children’s hospital on Long Island. The games will be played on University recreation fields throughout the event, from 2:00 pm to 9 pm.

The APD Fall Classic drew more than 500 spectators in its first two years. The event to date has raised more than $15,000 for children’s charities, a record for any Stony Brook University Greek or undergraduate-run program. The mission of the student-run charity event is, “To help those who cannot help themselves, to create an opportunity for all those who are able and willing to become part of something greater, and to provide a central focal point for University Greek Life, the Student Body, University Athletics, Stony Brook University administration, and Suffolk County community to come together for a good cause.”

A total of eight teams will play for the trophy. In addition to the games, there will be free food, music and entertainment. The opening ceremony will include the national anthem, presenting of the flag by the Stony Brook University Color Guard, and a performance by the Stony Brook Dance Team. The Stony Brook mascot, Wolfie, will prowl the ball fields and entertain spectators and kids during the day.

Established in June 2010, Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital currently operates 100 pediatric beds with a faculty of more than 100 pediatric providers in 30 different specialties and more than 200 voluntary pediatric faculty members. More than 7,000 children and adolescents are admitted to SBUH each year and in 2009 the hospital provided primary pediatric care services to more than 50,000 children with Medicaid coverage.

In 2011, Stony Brook University Hospital will complete the construction of the most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in New York State, adding to its existing specialized children’s services, including the Regional Perinatal Center, the National Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis Center, the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program, the Pediatric Cardiology Program, Pediatric HIV and AIDS Center, Cystic Fibrosis Center and the Cody Center for Autism and Development Disabilities. Stony Brook Children’s represents a forceful response by the Medical Center to an increasing national trend within pediatric medicine in the severity of childhood illness, prevalence of chronic conditions and survivorship of care. This hospital will be able to serve the needs of the children of Suffolk County as a community hospital for local residents, a tertiary hospital for complex, chronic or congenital conditions and a safety net hospital for those who are underinsured or uninsured.

Tickets for the APD Fall Classic are $10 each and are sold on campus at the Student Activities Center ticket office. For Stony Brook University undergraduates, tickets are $5 each. For more information about the charity event, please visit
