citizens of Brookhaven on September 9. Sponsored by the Department of Anesthesiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, the “lunch and learn” program will be the first in a series of discussions on pain management this fall by Stony Brook healthcare professionals at various Long Island senior centers. The event takes place at the Rose Tapper Senior Center in Miller Place, from 11:30 to 2:00 PM.

“Unfortunately pain is a common problem related to conditions and diseases as we age, so it is important for senior citizens in our region to become more aware of how to manage their  pain,” says Brian Durkin, D.O., Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Director, Center for Pain Management, Stony Brook University Medical Center. “There are many new and exciting solutions to some of the chronic pain problems associated with aging, and we will describe some of these at the seminars.”

The first seminar is part of what Dr. Durkin is calling the Center’s Geriatric Pain Initiative, a focus on educating senior citizens about pain. Part of the Initiative will include informative sessions on how to treat specific conditions that often affect this part of the population.

During “Getting a Grip on Geriatric Pain,” Dr. Durkin and his Center for Pain Management colleagues will discuss general pain management and the importance of pain management in the context of maximizing ones overall health and well being. Specific educational topics include: Vertebral Compression Fractures, presented by Marco Palmieri, D.O.; Post-Shingles Pain, presented by Stacey Hildebrand, N.P.; and Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, by Dr. Durkin.

Dr. Durkin’s Pain Management will answer questions at the end of presentations. Attendees can also make an appointment with the Center. For more information, contact 631-638-PAIN.
