AMND Philanthropy

Stony Brook University paleontologist Dr. David Krause surrounded by eager learners and fledging philanthropists, all grades K-5, at the “Roar! Back to School with Dinosaurs” event.

Center

in Northport, N.Y., on August 20, took part in a two-hour
exploration and Q & A on topics that do not seemingly go together – fossils and philanthropy. Guest speaker David W. Krause, Ph.D., Distinguished Service Professor, Department of Anatomical Sciences, Stony Brook University, set the tone and talked about fossils that he and paleontology colleagues discovered in Madagascar since 1993 and his philanthropic work to improve the lives of children living in Madagascar through the

Madagascar Ankizy Fund

.

The event, titled “Roar! Back to School with Dinosaurs,” included numerous activities for the children, all entering grades K-5. Following Dr. Krause’s presentation, the students worked together on a model T-Rex fossil dig reconstruction.

“The children were not only fascinated about the dinosaurs and what researching fossils is all about, they learned that each one of them can be empowered to do something to make difference in the lives of other children, locally or anywhere in the world,” says Bryan Horan, Director of the Philanthropy Center.

Horan also read them the book, How Dinosaurs Go To School, and explained to the students that the school supplies they donated that day would benefit the Family Service League “Backpacks for Back to School” supply drive. The children and their families also donated $280 to the Madagascar Ankizy Fund. These funds will be used to provide six months of salary to a teacher in one of the Madagascar Ankizy Fund schools.
